Museums serve as vital institutions in safeguarding natural and cultural heritage, fostering cultural diversity, strengthening social cohesion, and advancing the sustainable development of civilization. In recent years, museums globally have experienced significant growth and transformation in terms of both scale and structure. However, the sector continues to confront critical challenges, chief among them being the imbalance between the supply and demand of specialized talent and the insufficient professional expertise of personnel. These issues hinder the ability of museums to navigate and achieve the transformation and innovation required in the context of the new era.
In response to these pressing challenges, Zhejiang University has joined forces with leading higher education institutions worldwide to establish the International University Alliance for Museum Studies (IATMU). The Alliance aims to foster global partnerships in museum studies education and to build mechanisms for resource sharing to create innovative models, pathways, and ecosystems for talent cultivation. By addressing key challenges related to professional development and capacity-building within the museum sector, the Alliance seeks to shape the future of museum studies education and practice.
The Alliance is committed to transcending geographical and disciplinary boundaries, establishing itself as a cross-regional academic organization focused on sustainable development. It endeavors to enhance the specialization and coordination of museum studies education and talent development on a global scale. Through fostering international collaboration, facilitating resource mobility, and building mechanisms for global cooperation in museum studies education, the Alliance aims to cultivate highly skilled professionals capable of driving innovation and facilitating the ecological transformation of the museum sector.
Furthermore, the Alliance aspires to position IATMU as a specialized committee under the auspices of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), thereby enhancing its international influence and professional recognition within the global museum community. Looking ahead, the Alliance envisions itself as a global leader in museum studies education, actively welcoming like-minded higher education and research institutions to join its efforts. Together, the Alliance will contribute to the development of museum studies as a scholarly discipline and to the broader advancement of the global museum field.
