Overview & Mission

概况与使命

The School of Art and Archaeology was established in April 2019, bringing together four departments — Archaeology and Cultural Heritage, Art History, Fine Arts, and Design Arts — with the Zhejiang University Museum of Art and Archaeology, a National First-Class Museum, on the Xixi Campus.

The School advances integrated teaching and research across archaeology, the history of art, studio practice and design arts, grounded in the material culture of China and Asia and connected to leading museums and partners worldwide. Its work spans field excavation and conservation, the study and stewardship of collections, and contemporary art and design.

02

History & Heritage

历史与传承

The School’s roots run deep. Zhejiang University taught archaeology before 1949, drawing scholars such as Xia Nai and Sha Menghai, and figures central to modern Chinese art — Ma Yifu, Shen Yinmo, and Feng Zikai among them.

That inheritance shapes the School today: a commitment to rigorous scholarship, to the close study of objects, and to the humanistic grounding that links archaeology, art history and creative practice.
